Organisers Wind up Widely Supported Bottle Deposit Petition.
Motueka Guardian, September 2005
Motueka community group ‘CommunityAction for People and Planet' are winding down a petition campaign calling on Nelson and Tasman Council's to support mandatory bottle deposit laws, as the petition has already made it's point.
Since being launched a month ago at Ecofest, the petition has received 12 51 confirmed signatures. CommunityAction are calling for the return of petition forms still circulating locally. We expect these will bring in at least 500 more signatures.
“We see no reason to continue the petition, as the point has been made quite clearly. There is strong local support for this simple and sustainable solution to glass recycling and litter problems. We look forward to Councillors acting on this mandate.” Said Duncan Eddy,‘CommunityAction for People and Planet' spokesperson.
“ We want to see the reintroduction of container deposits linked with bottle washing and reuse. New Zealand's glass reprocessing capacity has been reached, and local councils and ratepayers are currently paying the cost. We're asking our elected representatives to advocate for bottle deposit legislation, as a way to lift this burden from our shoulders.”
“Bottle deposits cut down on costs and waste and generate local employment in the numerous countries and states where they are currently used.”
CommunityAction will present the petition to local Councillors in the near future, when all signatures have been counted.
